Ins and Outs was created as an accessible alternative to the revoked Sexual Education curriculum across Ontario elementary schools. Using the 2015 Health & Physical Education curriculum as a guideline I created a game-based application for students to further their sexual education.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
My top priority was to create games that would equally engage students from grade 1 to grade 8. I wanted each game to be informative without the student feeling overwhelmed or even realizing the amount of content they were intaking. In the Health & Physical Education curriculum, there are 8 grades and over 15 concepts alone to cover each year. My challenge was simplifying the content to an age-appropriate level, maintain its engagement, and keeping a cohesive theme throughout each year.
Due to the amount of content, I chose one singular concept and worked through its lessons. From an experience design standpoint, it made the most sense to divide the curriculum into grades and then concepts instead of the other way around. Because of time limitations, I worked on a single game for children in Grade Two. One of the primary concepts for this age group is personal space. Throughout each year this concept will grow and eventually be turned into a lesson of consent for the Grade Eight level.
I tested the wireframes with users and went through several rounds of design critique with concerned parents and educators.
